Chrysler Builds Its One-Millionth Jeep Wrangler

2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited: Car Seat Check

philadelphia-jeep-dealer-car-seat
The four-door Jeep Wrangler is great for families, but can they accommodate a car seat? Cars.com answers that question.

“For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide 30 rear-facing infant-safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible child-safety seat and Graco high-back TurboBooster seat.”

“The front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant seat and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat. We also install the convertible seat in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit. If there’s a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible.”

More U.S. Made Jeep Wranglers as Toledo Plant Increases Production to Meet Demand

Any time Chrysler Group LLC Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne talks about Jeep, you’re likely to hear two things — that the brand is key to Chrysler’s goal of international expansion, and that he’d sell more Jeeps if he had more to sell.

Under plans outlined to The Blade on Monday, he’ll soon get a few dozen more Wranglers each day.

Dan Henneman, Jeep unit chairman for the Toledo Assembly complex, said starting April 1, Chrysler will begin running the Wrangler assembly line through breaks and add a third shift to the Wrangler paint shop, allowing production of another 60 to 70 vehicles per day.

Right now, the line stops for workers’ 10 and 15-minute breaks, idling the line for 50 minutes per shift. Under the new arrangement, workers still will get the breaks, but the line will be kept moving by adding an extra worker to each team who will rotate through the jobs.

My Jeep obsession: When to stop being frugal

brown jeep wrangler with top down and brown dog in the front seatHere’s the thing: I have wanted a Jeep Wrangler since I was 16 years old.

That’s when one of my soccer teammates got a new one for her birthday. My experience was different.

When I turned 17, my mom handed me the spare key to her old Dodge Caravan to say I could use it when she wasn’t ferrying around my siblings.

Even after I bought a sensible, affordable Honda Civic after college, the idea of a Wrangler has been stuck in my craw.

I’ve priced them hundreds of times — new ones, used ones, certified preowned ones.

I’ve scoured Craigslist and car websites, dreaming of driving one down to the Jersey Shore — an area about which I have written two books — wind in my hair as I cruised to the beach in the ultimate beach car.

But I told myself I couldn’t buy a Jeep. It’s not a sensible car.

My Civic was fine, and when it wasn’t fine, I’d just buy another two-door sedan because that’s the sensible, financially correct thing to do.

Well, screw that.

I’m a saver. I put away more than half of my income toward retirement and emergency savings.

I bought a house that costs much less than what I can afford. I even appreciate having a smaller dog because she doesn’t eat as much as a big dog would.

But as I looked at my friend’s 1999 tan, manual Jeep Wrangler Sport, I realized frugality should not be the rule for every part of our lives.

I have wanted this car since before I could drive.

As part of this campaign, Jeep announced today that it will be donating up to $300,000 to the United Services Organizations (USO), and you can help.

Jeep sets all-time sales record in 2012

jeep-wrangler
Last year was good to Jeep. Chrysler has announced its trail-rated brand set an all-time global sales record in 2012 by moving 701,626 units. That number easily surpasses the previous record set in 1999 when Jeep sold 675,494 models. All told, the brand saw a 19-percent sales increase worldwide over 2011, and much of that swell can be traced directly to the Wrangler. While the Grand Cherokee led Jeep sales, the Wrangler posted record numbers both globally and within the US, moving 194,142 and 141,669 units in each market, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Compass beat its previous global sales record with 103,321 units rolling off of dealer lots. In the US, Jeep sold 62,010 Patriot units, breaking that model’s previous record as well. Jeep’s impressive performance in 2012 marks the second year in a row the brand has seen double-digit percentage sales increases. Check out the full press release here.
